A Beginner's Guide to the Moroccan Hammam Ritual at Home

The Moroccan hammam is more than a body care routine, it is a ritual of warmth, cleansing, and intentional self-care rooted in tradition. For many, it is one of the most beloved parts of Moroccan beauty culture, transforming an ordinary shower into a moment of reset and renewal.

If you are new to Moroccan self-care rituals, starting at home can be simple. The goal is not perfection. It is to create a warm, slow moment that allows you to care for your skin and reconnect with yourself through a practice that has been cherished for generations.

Step1: Create warmth and steam

Begin with a warm shower or bath to soften the skin and open the pores. The warmth is an important part of the ritual because it prepares the skin and creates the calming atmosphere that makes the hammam experience feel so special.

Step2: Apply Moroccan black soap

Moroccan black soap is traditionally used as the first step in the hammam ritual. Apply it to damp skin and allow it to sit for a few minutes. This step helps prepare the skin for exfoliation and turns the ritual into a spa-like moment of care.

Step 3: Exfoliate with a Kessa glove

Once the skin has softened, use a Kessa glove on damp skin in  gentle sweeping motions. This is one of the most iconic steps of the Moroccan hammam and is often what makes the ritual feel deeply satisfying and transformative.

Step 4: Rinse and nourish

After exfoliation, Rinse thoroughly and follow with a body oil or your preferred moisturising ritual. This is the perfect moment to slow down and give your skin extra care.

Step 5: Turn it into a weekly ritual

The beauty of the Moroccan hammam is not just in the products, but in the rhythm of the ritual itself. Set aside time weekly or whenever your body needs a reset. Light a candle, prepare your products, and make it a moment you look forward to.

At HADD Beauty, we love rituals that honour heritage while fitting beautifully into modern life. If you are building your own Moroccan self-care routine, start simple and let it become something meaningful over time.
